Blocking Spam: How to stop referral traffic

If you’re an analytics nerd like us at I-ology or just like understanding your website traffic, you’re probably familiar with spam referrals and most likely “” , block spam, block referral, spam, i-ology

Spam referral can really distort your metrics, and for our team who reports metrics like these back to clients, these referrals can really inflate analytics data that doesn’t truly represent the client’s online impact and site value. And to truly understand the analytics of your website, the best thing to do is to block spam referrals like these. and sites they work with such as, and a few other similar URLs, utilize referrer spam indexing to promote their spammy websites. Why? Who knows. I suppose there’s value in there somewhere. Someone has to make money or else why would they do it, right? Spammers use this method as a marketing tactic. You see the site in your analytics and then Google it or look it up, this then helps them generate organic and direct traffic. But whatever that reason is for annoying us and ruining our bounce rate may be, the fact is we can block these sites and hopefully get a more accurate picture of a site’s data with these simple steps:

  1. First you need to setup a filter in Google Analytics. Go to your Google Analytics account, find the Admin tab up at the top of the page in the main navigation. Click Filters followed by New Filter., block spam, block referral, spam, i-ology

You will then create a new filter and name it Once you’ve done that, go to Custom, click Filter Field, click on Campaign Source. Then in the Filter Pattern box add the link, click save at the bottom., block spam, block referral, spam, i-ology

  1. Now, time to block these spammers. You will need to access your .htacess file and enter the following code:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER}
RewriteRule .* – [F]
